LAS VEGAS -- UNLV announced Wednesday that it will proceed with plans to develop an on-campus mega-events center without Majestic Realty Co., concluding its exclusive negotiation agreement effective May 27.

“UNLV is committed to moving forward with this important project and believes it is best able to do so by working directly with resort industry and community stakeholders,” said Don Snyder, UNLV Hotel College dean and university point person on the UNLVNow project.

UNLV, its volunteer development advisory board, and the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents will continue to work with supporters in the resort industry and throughout the community to develop the project.

Snyder, a former president of Boyd Gaming, oversaw the development of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and the Fremont Street Experience, two of the largest public-private partnerships in Nevada history.

UNLV is also working closely with Nevada lawmakers to enact legislation creating a tax district that Snyder says will play a key role in moving the project forward.

An economic impact report from the University of Michigan Center for Sport Management estimates the project could add nearly $400 million in needed impact each year to our local economy.
