LAS VEGAS -- Members of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Criminal Apprehension Team will be presented a TOP COPS Award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Sunday.

will receive the prestigious award from National Association of Police Organizations.
This incident took place on February 1, 2012 when murder suspect Jason Baires fled from his vehicle and lead members of the LVMPD Criminal Apprehension Team on a foot chase.
Armed with a handgun, Baires fled but was struck and subsequently pinned under a police vehicle. Baires then fired several shots at the officers striking Detective Greg Theobald. Officers returned fire and Baires was killed in the shootout.
CAT members placed Detective Theobald into the back seat of a police vehicle and kept pressure on his wound while he was rushed to UMC Trauma.

The TOP COPS Awards educates the American public about our nation’s heroes and to pay tribute to law enforcement officers in federal, state, county, and local agencies from across the country for actions above and beyond the call of duty during the preceding year.
Our TOP COPS are nominated by fellow officers. An independent Awards Selection Committee compromised of national law enforcement representatives select, from hundreds of nominations, one TOP COP case from each of the 50 States and U.S. territories.
