BAKER, Calif. (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- A pickup truck slammed into a tour bus on Interstate 15 on Saturday morning about 10 miles south of here, leaving one person dead and five injured and causing officials to close the northbound highway, halting all traffic heading toward Las Vegas.

California Highway Patrol Officer Don Spiker said officials are investigating why the pickup truck driver, who was traveling southbound on I-15 near Zzyzx Road about 10 miles southwest of Baker, crossed the center divider.

Traffic headed to Vegas was completely stopped for about two hours, but one lane was opened just before 1 p.m. There was a 15- to 20-mile backup as of 4 p.m., and CHP's Spiker said the investigation will likely slow traffic into the evening hours.

The pickup truck rolled over the dirt median, crossed into northbound lanes and struck the tour bus at a 45-degree angle, bursting into flames. The driver of the pickup was killed. The driver of the tour bus suffered a major leg laceration and was flown to UMC in Las Vegas.

Four passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries and were to be transported to area hospitals.

Spiker said the tour bus was from Eagle Tours based in El Monte, Calif., with 29 tourists from China, a tour guide and the driver on board. He said he believed the bus was headed to Las Vegas, but officials were still gathering information.
