LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Thanks to the Olympics, athletes such as Michael Phelps and Gaby Douglas have become household names.
In Las Vegas, a group of young athletes are working to put Nevada on the map in the world of gymnastics.
At Vitaly's School of Gymnastics, near Cheyenne and Jones, future Olympians are in the making.
At just 13 years old, Nikita Boltsky is a tumbling powerhouse.
“I want to go to the Olympics in 2020 for sure,” he said.
He’s off to a good start. Nikita just won best all -around gymnast at the Junior Olympic Nationals.
Right now, Nikita is at level 8, just a couple levels shy of those who compete on the world stage at the Olympic Games.
Vitaly Sherbo, a six-time gold medalist who runs the school, said Nikita is far ahead of his expectations but he isn’t the only protégé he’s grooming for greatness. Vitaly’s School of Gymnastics is teeming with young talent. Many of them spend five hours a day in the gym.
According to Sherbo, when you compare the number of male gymnasts to their female counterparts, they’re few and far between, especially at the level his boys are competing.
For the boys, they get lessons in gymnastics and linguistics -- a little Russian often finds its way into his coaching. Through Sherbo’s guidance, he’s molding legends in the making, hungry to make it to the top of their game.
