LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The Las Vegas Metro Police Department's fatality detail has been sent to investigate a pedestrian killed by a vehicle around 10:20 this morning.

The woman was struck on Decatur between Lake Mead and Vegas Drive. Police say the woman was not in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by an SUV and killed instantly.

The woman was crossing Decatur Boulevard from east to west outside of a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a southbound 1998 Isuzu Hombre Pickup Truck driving by Las Vegas resident Robert Severin.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel.

Metro police say they're stumped as to why people aren't getting the message and being more cautious when crossing streets and using a marked crosswalk.

This collision was the fifth traffic related fatality in LVMPD's jurisdiction in 2013. The collision remains under
investigation by the LVMPD Accident Investigation Section.

You also have to wonder,(even though they may be jaywalking), how drivers do NOT see the pedestrian they are about to hit. I am sure there are some circumstances where the pedestrian steps out and you have no time to react (which might be this case, have not heard), but plenty are hit right in the middle of the road. Are drivers not paying attention at all? I have seen people jaywalking while I was driving, but I slow up or change lanes instead of killing them.

You really have to wonder why pedestrians are not crossing at a marked cross walk and if not there, why are they not waiting for traffic to clear. Just because you see a vehicle 100 yards away does not mean that traffic if clear, you have no idea of the distance this vehicle is covering. Has anyone thought that maybe these pedestrians are committing suicide???
