NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) – Constituents are reacting to state Sen. Kelvin Atkinson’s emotional revelation from Carson City.

The Democrat from North Las Vegas publicly announced Monday night that he is gay.

It came during an emotional floor debate about Senate Joint Resolution 13, which ended up passing in a 12-9 vote.

During his speech, Atkinson's challenged the argument that gay marriage threatens the definition of marriage, saying if gay marriage hurts your marriage, then your marriage was in trouble in the first place.

Parker Moriah Macrae and De Cervantes have been closely following a measure in Carson City that would repeal the state's ban.

“We've got to support gay marriage,” Macrae said. “The fact the congressman came out like this is just awesome.”

Although it passed the state Senate, it's still in its early stages.

If this measure is approved by the state Assembly and both houses, the measure will go to the voters in 2016.

PAHOA, HAWAII - OCTOBER 26: In this handout provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), A portion of the front of the June 27th lava flow burns through thick vegetation and a fence on October 26, 2014 in Pahoa, Hawaii. Scientists of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory conducted ground and air observations of the lava flow from the Kilauea Volcano and determined that it was 510 meters (560 yards) upslope from Pa-hoa Village Road and the flow width was about 50 meters (55 yards) at the leading edge. Molten rock from the flow is inching its way towards homes in the town of Pahoa on Hawaii's Big Island where close to a thousand people live. (Photo by USGS via Getty Images) (Handout, 2014 USGS)
