LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The Boy Scouts of America has proposed to lift a longtime ban on gays. If approved, gay youth members would be allowed in. Gay leaders would still be out.

A Boy Scout statement issued nationally says: "The proposed resolution also reinforces that Scouting is a youth program, and any sexual conduct, whether heterosexual or homosexual, by youth of Scouting age is contrary to the virtues of Scouting."

In Las Vegas, there are more than 19,000 scouts and more than 7,000 adult volunteers. The Las Vegas Boy Scout headquarters says more than half of them are connected to the Church of Latter-Day Saints.

The LDS church released a statement to News 3: "Church leaders will take the time needed to fully review the language and study the implications of this new proposal."

“The church is pretty clear on its beliefs on what we believe, and our beliefs state the same that the BSA has always done in the past and that's what we go by,” said church member Preston Cole.

Laura Martin, of the social justice organization PLAN, says the message is insulting.

“The message they are sending out is that gay adults shouldn't be around children because Boy Scouts … they are on camping trips. They are together doing different projects, they're mentoring,” she said, “And the message that the Boy Scouts is sending out is gay parents shouldn't be allowed to mentor children, and that's the wrong message to send out to anybody.”
