LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- A local mother accused of killing her mentally challenged son is due in court today.
Joann Hafer, 51, is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. in the Regional Justice Center.
Police say the victim, 28-year-old Matthew Hafer, had autism with the mental capacity of a fourth-grader and that his mother -- who was his sole care provider -- had become frustrated.
Police found Hafer on July 27 on the floor of her apartment near Carey Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. Her son’s body was in a recliner partially covered with a sheet.
Decomposition had set in, indicating he’d been dead for several days.
Police say empty pill bottles and other evidence led them to believe the distraught mother gave her son a lethal amount of prescription drugs, then took the substance herself in a suicide attempt.
They also say they found several notes and letters left behind by Hafer.
When she awoke at the hospital she initially denied writing the letters but then admitted to it and told police she wanted to be cremated with her son and have their ashes spread at Lake Mead.
