LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Honor Flight Nevada led a group of World War II veterans from Las Vegas to Washington D.C. this past weekend to visit the National WWII Memorial.

Coming Tuesday: Nevada’s veterans visit the World War II Memorial for the very first time. On News 3 Nightly at 6.
Claude Bateman is one of 35 World War II veterans on honor flight Nevada's inaugural Las Vegas voyage. Bateman served 21 years, including 17 as an Air Force pilot. He called the trip a dream come true.

“I'm just feeling ecstatic, and I'm honored to be able to go,” Bateman said.

Fellow veteran Al Rifkin tells us, “My son and grandson are going to be there. I want him to see everything we went through.”

One by one, embraced by a color guard salute, the veterans boarded Nevada One, where the celebration continued. Stories are shared, and new friendships are formed.

A sense of humor is never far behind; neither are the haunting memories of what unites them.

Four and a half hours after takeoff, a water arch salute ushers the veterans into the Baltimore airport, where hundreds of grateful strangers are waiting to welcome them with open arms.

The mission of Honor Flight is to transport America's veterans to Washington D. C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.
