LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- According to law enforcement officials, the stretch of Interstate 15 from Las Vegas into California has been called one of the deadliest roadways in the nation.

But the Nevada Highway Patrol is working to change that stigma and save lives in the process.

The Highway Patrol's Zero Tolerance Effort – focused on a 26-mile stretch heading into California -- has been under way for more than six months.

Compared with this time last year over that stretch, there has been one fatality, down from four. Injury crashes have been cut in half. The numbers also reflect an uptick in the number of stops, which have led to more than 9,000 citations.

With each stop, NHP Trooper Loy Hixson says they're working to raise awareness about safe driving and ultimately save lives.

Among the main offenses is speeding, especially when the lanes widen out of California. Hixson says it's about changing people's mindset. The progress made so far is generating buzz nationally.

“it's definitely going to widen some eyes and perk up some ears because other agencies may look at it and say what are they doing that we can bring that type of success to our state,” Hixson said.

The California Highway Patrol has started to work with NHP troopers to carry this into the Golden State.
