LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- More and more people are turning to raw local honey as a way to cope with seasonal allergies. Some swear by it.

But those in the medical community question whether local honey is really a cure-all.

Dr. Victor Cohen, who has been practicing medicine in Las Vegas his entire adult life, always has busy during allergy season.

Treating seasonal allergies is his specialty, and some of his patients come in on a regular basis for allergy shots.

He says the science just doesn’t support the theory that raw local honey can cure seasonal allergies.

“I’m sure there are some people who feel they benefit,” Dr. Cohen said, “but a study that compared raw local honey to regular honey to a placebo of Karo Syrup found no difference.

“The placebo effect with allergies is pretty impressive; it’s as much as 30 percent. People who take something they think will work even though there’s no immunological basis for it. They think they’re better.

“There’s no obvious scientific rationale for it, but if you think it makes you feel better, then go for it.”

Dr. Cohen does say raw, unpasteurized honey is not for everyone. He actually has a handful of patients who are allergic to honey.

Children, especially babies and toddlers, should never be given unpasteurized honey for fear of botulism.
