LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Nevada has pulled in more than $2.5 million from entrepreneurs looking to cash in on the state’s cannabis industry.

Dispensaries could be the next big attraction for tourists in southern Nevada.

Dispensary applicants paid a $5,000 application fee on top of thousands more in additional fees. A state legislative subcommittee on medical marijuana met Thursday to get an update on the growing numbers.

"We are, as of yesterday, at 497 applications. The majority are from Southern Nevada. The last time we ran a percentage, 68 percent of the applications are from this area," said Chad Westom who oversees the process.

There are only 40 dispensary licenses available in Clark County.

State employees revealed today nearly 6,500 Nevadans now have medical marijuana cards, and thousands more are expected to be issued as dispensaries start opening early next year.

The state is now looking over more than 500 applications from people who want to get into the medical marijuana business.

When the shops finally open, they could be the next big attraction for tourists in southern Nevada.

The Travel Joint is a Las Vegas-based website catering to a unique tourism segment – marijuana smokers.

Creators of the website are hoping to cash in on visitors interested in smoking medical marijuana in Nevada.

The website is geared toward baby boomers and allows tourists to book hotels, cars, and flights, and will soon offer a map of Clark County’s dispensaries.

State Senator Tick Segerblom said dispensaries will give tourists who have medical marijuana cards in other states another reason to visit our city.
