NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Medical marijuana is legal in Nevada, and local governments are now in the process of approving businesses to sell it.
Hundreds of entrepreneurs are lining up for the opportunity to open a medical marijuana business in North Las Vegas.
Initially, only Clark County and Las Vegas accepted applications; now North Las Vegas is accepting applications for medical marijuana businesses.
Medical marijuana is a magnet for entrepreneurs looking to cash in on growth facilities. The city is hoping to collect thousands of dollars in revenue from application fees.
To qualify these businesses will have to be 1,000 feet from schools and parks and 300 feet from homes.
While dispensaries will be in retail centers, grow facilities will be in industrial areas like the northeast part of the valley near Apex, where Interstate 15 meets 93 North.
Greg Blackburn is the director of community development and compliance in North Las Vegas.
Entrepreneurs have until August 5 to apply with North Las Vegas. After the application receives state approval, businesses will need final approval from the city council. The application process for dispensaries will come later.
