LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3)-- A medical marijuana dispensary could open soon in your neighborhood.
Dispensary applicants gave their pitches to the public on Thursday. Just 18 applicants out of 81 will make the cut.
Clark County Commissioners heard proposals from more than three dozen groups with potential business locations in the Paradise area. Many of the applicants are wealthy and well connected.
The commissioners paid very close attention to diversity -- which groups included women and minorities, and which proposed businesses were majority locally owned.
The groups included gaming executives, former politicians, doctors, Las Vegas Sun owner Brian Greenspun, and well-known injury attorney Ed Bernstein, to name a few.
Each group talked about the location of their proposed businesses, patient accessibility and proximity to bus stops, security, and quality control.
Some received support from community members; others did not.
Because the gaming control board has banned its members from owning medical marijuana establishments, many at the meeting told commissioners that they would give up their gaming licenses, if chosen.
Commissioners will hear from applicants with proposed Spring Valley locations Friday morning.
