(NBC News) Ariel Castro, the man accused of holding three women captive in his Cleveland, Ohio home for nearly a decade, pleaded not guilty to hundreds of new charges Wednesday.
Unlike his last two court appearances, Castro was ordered by the judge to raise his head and open his eyes as the expanded list of charges was read in court.
There were 977 counts in all, including two counts of aggravated murder.
Castro allegedly caused the miscarriage of two children he fathered with one of the women.
Defense attorneys have hinted that he would plead guilty to all of the charges if the death penalty for the aggravated murder counts are taken off the table.
