(NBC News) Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl is back in the United States for the first time since his capture by the Taliban five years ago.

Overnight a military transport plane brought the former P.O.W. from Germany to Texas, where he will continue his reintegration process.

Army doctors say Bergdahl is getting better physically, but needs more time to recover emotionally and psychologically after being held for five years by the Taliban as a prisoner of war.

This morning a spokesman for the Bergdahl family released this statement: "While the Bergdahls are overjoyed that their son has returned to the United States, Mr. and Mrs. Bergdahl don't intend to make any travel plans public. They ask for continued privacy as they concentrate on their son's reintegration

During his captivity Bergdahl reportedly spent extended time in solitary confinment, and endured repeated physical torture.
