BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The standoff between Colorado's attorney general and a county clerk over gay marriage echoes a drama that played out in the state nearly 40 years ago.

In 1975, then-Boulder County Clerk Clela Rorex stumbled into history when a gay couple applied for a marriage license and she granted it. She stopped at the order of the then-attorney general after issuing licenses to six couples.

Current Boulder County Clerk Hillary Hall has issued about 100 licenses since a federal appeal court in Denver overturned Utah's gay marriage ban last month. That ruling was put on hold, and Attorney General John Suthers says Colorado's 2006 gay marriage ban remains on the books.

A judge is holding a hearing Wednesday on whether Hall can keep issuing the licenses.
