(NBC News) President Obama says U.S. troops won't be heading back into combat in Iraq.

Portions of Iraq are under siege by militant Islamic fundamentalists, with forces converging on Baghdad.

The Iraqi government has asked for U.S. air support.

President Obama is trying to decide how to regain the fragile stability as his his national security team considers options including airstrikes, surveillance and funding.

"The U.S. will do its part, but ultimately its up to the Iraqis as a sovereign nation to solve their problems," Obama said Friday. "The United States is not simply going to involve itself in a military action in the absence of a political plan by the Iraqis."
