WASHINGTON (AP) -- Now it's Mitt Romney who wants to be the candidate of change.

Romney is seizing on President Barack Obama's comment that "you can't change Washington from the inside." Grasping for a way to right his campaign and appeal to independents, the Republican nominee says he has what it takes to end the nasty partisanship in Washington.

The president's campaign counters by noting that Romney said just that in 2007 when he was running for the 2008 Republican nomination. Romney said then: "I don't think you change Washington from the inside. I think you change it from the outside."

Both candidates are expected in battleground states Friday, with Romney campaigning and raising money in Nevada and Obama holding a rally in Woodbridge, Va., just a short trip from the White House.

Romney is not my first choice, but he is eminently more qualified (than Obama) to lead this country back to prosperity and to a position of renewed, well-deserved respect from our global neighbors. Where are all of Obama's "disclosures"? Here's the Romney/Ryan disclosures. Quit whining, people. Romney's Five Point Plan http://goo.gl/FM5v0 Romney/Ryan Public Disclosures http://goo.gl/RygP1 These returns reflect the complexity of our tax laws and the types of investment activity that I would anticipate for persons in their circumstances. There is no indication or suggestion of any tax-motivated or aggressive tax planning activities. In my judgment, they have fully satisfied their responsibilities as taxpayers. They have done so by relying on a highly reputable return preparer and other advisors, who have in turn relied primarily on information provided by third parties to them and to the IRS. The end result of that process has been returns that include a multitude of schedules, IRS forms and accompanying statements that provide appropriate transparency and the proper payment of taxes that Governor and Mrs. Romney owe under current law. -- Fred Goldberg, Former IRS Commissioner, 9.21.12
