SALINA, Kan. -- A Kansas man has successfully built and launched a submarine.

It took 27-year-old Scott Waters of Salina, Kan., years to build the underwater craft.

The sub is 4-foot-long, 6-foot-tall, 4-foot-wide, and weighs 4,500 pounds. It's completely custom-built using boiler-grade steel and can carry two people.

Exterior mounted tanks are filled with compressed air to raise and lower the sub.

It's also equipped with an exterior lighting system, global positioning system, underwater communication devices and sonar system with a 180-foot radius.

It's powered by eight Marine batteries.

When fully operational, the sub is designed to travel at 4 nautical knots, or 4.5 mph.
