LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The Nevada Board of Regents is opposing a bill to add a student representative to the panel.

Regents voted 12-1 on Friday against Assembly Joint Resolution 8, which would amend the Nevada Constitution to allow a college student to become a 14th voting member of the board.

Regents said they were supportive of student activism but expressed various concerns about the proposal, including that it would create an even-numbered board and the possibility of tie votes.

Student leaders across Nevada have argued they should have representation on the board because it sets policies that affect students, including tuition.

Nevada is one of 10 states without a student regent. Thirty-two states have student regents with voting rights.

The resolution would have to pass two legislative sessions before being placed on the 2016 ballot for voters to decide.
