LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) — One state senator thinks you should weigh in again on whether term limits are a good idea in Nevada.

Las Vegas Democrat Tick Segerblom says he believes it's time to give term limits the boot.

“We need all the brainpower and institutional knowledge we can get, and term limits deprives us of that,” he said.

Nevada voters passed term limits by a pretty healthy margin in 1996, limiting lawmakers to 12 years in office.

The law forced out five veteran lawmakers in time for the 2013 Legislative session. At the end of November, they will sweep out four more before lawmakers convene in 2015.

“People have to remember: In Nevada, we only meet for four months every two years,” Segerblom said. “So it take two months for even the experienced people to remember what they've forgotten and how the process works.”

As Segerblom sees it, this constant churn gives lobbyists and the industries they represent – gaming and mining -- even more influence.

Segerblom is filing a Senate Joint Resolution. What has to happen is his bill would have to pass the 2015 and 2017 legislatures. Because he's trying to change the state constitution, he would need to then go to the people in 2018.

If his bills pass in 2015 and 2107, then it would be on the statewide ballot in 2018 as a ballot initiative.
