CARSON CITY (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Nevada awmakers are wrapping up their 14th week of this legislative session.

There are only 24 more days to go. Today an assembly committee is asking if teens under the age of 18 should be able to use a tanning bed. Our capitol correspondent Mackenzie Warren is tracking this topic that has struck up quite the debate.

You might not realize it but teens are tanning. Whether it's prepping for the prom or just obsessed with getting that bronzed look.

But something we all know is the more you tan, the greater the risk for skin cancer.

Former News 3 reporter Stacey Escalante had stage-three melanoma. She also used tanning beds as a teen and is asking lawmakers to keep young people 18-and-under out of the tanning salons.

"Our whole goal is protecting Nevada’s kids," Escalante says. "We wouldn’t give them cigarettes or alcohol and this is a class 1 carcinogen. It' s not healthy. It's dangerous and we want parents to be educated so that they know these kids can’t go in these tanning beds."

Escalante's doctors told her there was a 90 percent chance her melanoma was brought on by her frequent trips to the tanning beds.

Some lawmakers are critical of the bill who believe it is too far reaching, hard to enforce, and would hurt tanning businesses in Nevada, but Escalante says teens have no business tanning.
