RENO (AP) -- The Washoe County School District says it will discontinue using small intervention rooms for students with disabilities after receiving a report on the rooms from an advocacy group.

People First of Nevada, which advocates for those with developmental disabilities, says children are put in the rooms in isolation for timeout or quiet time. They say children are forced to go in the rooms and are prevented from leaving.

The advocacy group is asking the school district to investigate all 93 of its schools for the rooms, remove all doors on the rooms and set plans in place to remove the rooms entirely.

Superintendent Pedro Martinez told The Reno Gazette-Journal that the district is addressing the issue and the rooms will not be used for disciplining children.
