As someone who frequents the Paseo Verde Library daily, I'm disgusted that this measure didn't pass. The library is a vibrant, community supported resource. They actually do have new release books and DVD's each week. It is not just for low-income residents. It's a place for like-minded and smart people to meet and organize to better our society. Seniors were provided free classes to learn how to use computers. This is a shame and just shows the absolute greed and ignorance of our residents. Shame on Henderson.

The $7 is the tip of the iceburg. Approve this question and the school district question and it opens the flood gates for every other government agency to ask for a bond. Not to mention this was a long-term proposal (30 years) to a short-term problem. The problem is their revenue is tied to property and sales tax, and you solve that by increasing tax rate for 30 years? Not well thought through. Enough is enough, services will be sacrificed as the working class is asked to share the burden of those who refuse to contribute to society. More welfare, more health care, more free programs same tax base, do the math.

@kfouche with all due respect Im puzzled by your post. It seems you believe that since you are unemployed and there is a free service for your child that you are able to take advantage of that you think the community as a whole should support that?? I am sorry you are not employed but how is it anyone else's responsibility to worry about what opportunities you provide for your child? I dont think not having a library restricts his ability for "social interation"....you can take him to a park and let him interact....and if its all about reading...why not create a small group in your area and host a reading time for kids in your home? Why is it the community that is responsible for this? I know it sounds rude...and I truly dont mean it that way. But as you used the term "reality check", perhaps this falls under the same category.

First off...they should have closed a library in the mall a LONG time ago....not financially smart to begin with. The big problem as to why this didnt pass is not because of the economy it is the fact that I believe the majority of users are the minority of voters. Meaning--the majority of people using the library facilities are likely not voting. The world has changed....libraries are outdated....really the main use of a library these days is for low-income families that have no internet access utilize the libraries for internet-access. I do not mean that rudely to anyone. I also know there are also a few other reasons...but seriously....the library just doesnt get used like it did 20 years ago. Students dont go to the library to do research papers like when I was in school. Books at the library are usually not "new release" books and consumers now are all about the NEW. Plus, books are much cheaper now--AND many of us access our reading on our kindle or other device. Magazines are read on-line. Heck, BOOKSTORES, are even changing the way we use libraries. Walk into bookstores now and they have couches and chairs all around for you to read...and usually a coffee counter to go with it. The world is changing. Sadly, libraries are going to be a thing of the past in the very near future. It is just not a smart decision for taxpayers to spend money on something used by fewer and fewer people.

I voted for the libraries and am appalled by the greediness of people. $7 is not a lot for those that can afford a property that expensive in the first place. People have become too greedy, uncaring and reliant on technology (Nook, Kindle, etc) I use the library every week for myself, family and my two year old son. He gets to enjoy weekly story times with other children that yes is free but for those like myself that are unemployed, it is one of the best things I can do for him in terms of social interaction. People seriously need a reality check on what truly is important in this world, city, state and for everyone else and not just for themselves. Take off the tunnel vision and start thinking about others.

Henderson cheapskates sacrificed a library. Las Vegas has a lot more class than Henderson.

A state that elected OBama deserves everything that he accomplished the last 4 years, nothing. Those two libraries that will close are just a preview of what will transpire in next OBama term.

They should just ask Obama for the money, after all he give Billions of US tax dollars to our enemies all over the world.

Way to step up, Henderson! Who needs books anyway, right? Who needs these resources, right? Wow. 7 lousy bucks is all it would have cost an average tax bill. Sad.
