LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Blaze Trumble is a 9-year-old boy with a big heart. He shows how caring and compassion can make a difference in Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Rescue Mission is kicking off the Thanksgiving holiday feeding traditional meals to nearly 1,200 of the valley's homeless.

Many Nevadans are facing difficult financial times, turning to nonprofits for help. As News 3's Christine Kim shows us, homelessness is a problem that one Boulder City family could not overlook.

Thanks to them, not only did the valley's homeless receive a hearty meal tonight, they also got a few presents to go along with it.

The smell of the holiday season fills the Las Vegas Rescue Mission with hundreds of plates feed the hungry who make their way across campus where warm gifts await.

The gifts are donations that will help the homeless get through the cold nights.

Two weeks ago on couple moved to Las Vegas and were forced to sleep on the streets. On this day they received clothing to help keep them warm on Thanksgiving.

Similar stories are hard for Trumble to ignore and for five years he's seen the power of giving up close. And, it was all his idea.

For his sixt birthday, Blaze told his parents he didn't want presents. He just wanted to help the homeless.

"At first I thought it was just something he was talking about and he would change his mind," said his mom Frannie Trumble. "But then I realized it was something he was serious about."

What started as a small push of 286 blankets now also includes hundreds of hats, gloves, and jackets.

The collection of clothing is for both adults and kids.

Blaze sums up his feelings in a few words.

“You're giving that but you're also getting.”

Because with one birthday wish he knows he's touching hundreds of other lives and he's looking forward to many more.
