LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- So who was David Schubert and how did he get caught is such a downward spiral?

Schubert talked about all that he lost to addiction with News 3's Mackenzie Warren nine months ago from a cell at the county jail.

Warren was the last television news reporter to ever talk to Schubert.

Schubert's fall from grace was long, it was public, and for him, it was painful.

Before Schubert started his prison sentence he said me he felt broken. Schubert's once-full life was now empty. He lost his job and ability to practice law and now he has lost it all.

Warren spoke through the detention center’s video conference system and it was clear he was a broken man.

He cried said he felt he was being made an example.

Either way, Schubert had worked his way to the very top as a Clark County deputy district attorney but News 3 saw him at his rock bottom awaiting a prison sentence.

“I let a lot of people down, I let the profession down, I let myself down,” Schubert said.

News 3 spoke to Schubert last October from protective custody at Clark County Detention Center.

Schubert was busted for buying $40 of cocaine back in 2011. It was a relatively small case--that got a lot of attention because of who Schubert was -- a former district attorney prosecutor.

Schubert prosecuted the high profile drug cases of Bruno Mars and Paris Hilton and made deals with both of them but he had a hard time making a deal in his own case because he ran away to Mexico.

The former prosecutor-turned-fugitive later turned himself in but said his downward spiral had been painful and left him devastated.

Schubert recently completed a five-month stint in prison for crack cocaine possession. He was released in April.
