LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The man who Metro says was under the influence when he was involved in a deadly crash Saturday evening made his first court appearance this morning.
Arturo Castillo, 23, is being held on $250,000 bail. Police say he was the driver of an SUV that drove off the road near Lake Mead and Rainbow, killing a passenger, Robert Brown, 15.
His attorney asked that Castillo be released because he has no priors as an adult. But because there was a death involved, the judge set bail.
The state also asked for more time, at least five business days, to file its complaint.
Castilllo's defense said he denies having been under the influence. According to the police report, Castillo admitted to having several beers and smoking marijuana.
Police also say Castillo failed a field sobriety test and preliminary breathalyzer.
A make-shift memorial has been set up near the crash scene in Brown's honor. It was the 25th death in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2013.
