LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- A massive billion dollar widening project on the valley's most traffic-choked interstate will break ground next year.

The expansion project on Interstate 15 is expected to cut time off drivers’ commute and eliminates traffic jams.

Project Neon has been in the works for about 10 years and is expected to cost more than $1 billion.

Every day, more than a quarter million cars travel through the Spaghetti Bowl.

There are two or three crashes each day in the area and, although most of them are fender benders, they can cause traffic to back up for miles.

Tracy Larkin-Thomason, with the NDOT, says once the project is complete, motorists can expect a smoother and safer commute.

"We're connecting the HOV lanes to the express lanes on 95, so we'll have 22 miles of HOV lanes. We're also doing an exit to the center, that will disperse right along right about where Wall Street is; what that does is reduces the weaving movements from going across the freeway,” Larkin-Thomason said.

To make room for the new freeway, the state is slowly removing businesses and homes in its path. In one neighborhood off Charleston Boulevard, there are plenty of empty lots.

The homes are bought by the state and then demolished.

Construction should last three years. The project is expected to wrap up in late 2018.
