LAS VEGAS -- Communities In Schools of Nevada, My News 3 and 97.1 The Point are challenging Las Vegas residents to help local students at the second annual Fill the Bus on Aug. 22 and 23.
Expanding to two days and locations this year, the Nevada affiliate of the nation’s leading dropout prevention program is collecting school supplies and uniforms for 44,000 students in need for the coming school year.
“Fill the Bus helps ensure that each student in the schools we serve can begin the school year with all the tools necessary for success,” said Diane Fearon, chief executive officer of CIS Nevada. “The cost of outfitting a student with needed supplies has risen as much as 20 percent in just one year. The majority of students we serve in Nevada are living at or below the poverty line, so it is vital that Communities In Schools have fully stocked resource rooms to support the needs of children who may not have clothing or food, much less school supplies. We have found that something as simple as a notebook or pen can be the catalyst for change in an at-risk student's life, helping them succeed in their classes."
Businesses and community partners are encouraged to bring their donations between 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 to the Sam’s Club at Arroyo Crossing (7100 Arroyo Crossing Pkwy.). Partners include The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Allegiant Air, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, DR Horton, Belfor Property Restorations, Global Experience Specialists, Inc. (GES), Todd English P.U.B., Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors, Pacific Coast Dental; Pugsley, Simpson & Coulter Architects, Gilman & Londot CPAs, Midcountry Bank and more.
On Saturday, Aug. 23 between 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., local residents are encouraged to bring their donations to the Sam’s Club at Centennial Hills (8080 W. Tropical Pkwy.) and stay for Family Fun Day. Children can enjoy interactive science projects from Mad Science, the mobile video games theater from Games 2 U, face painting and creations from balloon artists.
