LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) Is the Clark County School District offering enough money to convince retired teachers to return to the classroom?
One teacher has strong opinions on the teacher shortage. Richard Calmone, who had considered the school district's call to rehire retired teachers, says of teaching: "It was really rewarding [...] It's aggravating. It's frustrating. It's all the emotions every day, but well worth the effort."
The district is short about 250 teachers. A rehire letter was sent to roughly 600 retired instructors, offering a job and benefits. It stated, "our starting teacher salary is $34,684."
Ryan Yanagi is helping to find those teachers. "Teachers who have proven to be amazing, are high quality, that can show growth for our kids," Yanagi said. "We’ll invite them back to teach."
Calmone is one of those who received the letter from the Clark County School District. "They weren't offering enough of an incentive for me to give up a retirement basically, and go into a classroom," Calmone said.
There is the perk of having summers off, but after 30 years in the classroom, Calmone said it's not practical today.
"You have to take that income and average it over 12 months because that's when you're spending the money and that ($34,000) just doesn't make it," Calmone said.
The district says a retiree with a doctorate would make about $55,000, but most who return would earn less than $40,000 a year.
"We’ve sent out the letters to see what the interest level would be like, and we’ve had some that are wanting to come back, which is great," Yanagi said.
Calmone said, even in education, money talks, and he agrees that teachers who can, or will, return are invaluable.
"A person spends four years in college and goes on for a masters and in the private sector, with those qualifications, you can earn, beginning at 60k plus," Calmone said.
The advantage of bringing back retired teachers is the fact that they’ve done the job, they require little training, and they’re ready for the classroom.
