LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Catholic charities made a happy Thanksgiving for more than 1,500 of the area's homeless.

Organizers said 700 pounds of turkey was served along with 650 gallons of giblet gravy.

Hundreds of volunteers helped make this the best Thanksgiving for many of Las Vegas less fortunate.

Since 1965 Catholic Charities has cooked meals for the homeless on Thanksgiving. About 20 chefs were up since 2 a.m. cooking all the great food.

Many like Dennis Wilson say if it wasn’t for this he wouldn’t have a meal today.

Dennis wilson is appreciative. Wilson said on any day he really does not know where he's going to live. Thats why on this day of thanks he’s grateful.

“We don't have food and it's good to be in America and have this type of thing happen to you,” Wilson said.

Kelly Whittaker is one of the hundreds of volunteers that make all this happen. Since 1965 catholic charities has opened their doors to the less fortunate in our area.

“I have three children and it's very important to us my husband to teach them to be appreciative they have and help those less fortunate," Whittaker said. “It shows you that love can come down here too.”

Back in the kitchen, chefs have been hard at work. Since two this morning Executive Chef Juan Penate has been making sure everything taste great.

It’s the fourth year he’s made food for the less fortunate.

“Every year it becomes more intensive,” Penate said. “We always want to better the one than before."

for the leaders of catholic charities the sights of people happy makes this all worth it.
