Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy is caught in the midst of a battle that goes back more than a century in the American West.

Ranchers seek to maintain the open range that feeds their herds. Government, and changing social and political demands place limits on the practice.

The controversy, which has a legal trail dating more than 15 years in federal court, has fired up Twitter and Facebook.

The outcome is unclear for Bundy who is seen as a hero to some and an environmental lawbreaker to others.
