NORTH LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- The North Las Vegas lock up may be locked up for good.
Tonight we're learning layoffs and a shutdown are imminent. Closing the jail would mean shuffling inmates to another facility.
North Las Vegas City Manager Tim Hacker confirms with us that the city of Las Vegas will likely take on North Las Vegas' inmates.
The details of the deal are not final but the North Las Vegas Detention Center will be shut down to save the city money.
Talks with Las Vegas, Metro and Henderson have been ongoing. According to Hacker, Metro's jail beds were too expensive to lease and Henderson's jail did not have enough space.
Sources close to the deal tell us the city of Las Vegas will formally post the agenda item Wednesday outlining the interlocal agreement.
The Las Vegas City Council still has to approve the deal. That vote will come June 20.
Hacker says Las Vegas will likely rent one of its jail wings and allow current North Las Vegas corrections officers to staff it.
Hacker says maintaining its own corrections will salvage some jobs but confirms 50 corrections officers and staff will lose their job.
For weeks now, officers in North Las Vegas have been contacting us to say they knew their jobs were on the line.
We can confirm that now: the pink slips will go out the first week of July.
