LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- A local non-profit is reeling after thieves broke in and steal thousands of dollars’ worth of a valuable material and damaging property along the way.

News 3's Marissa Mike has a report from the Salvation Army's administration building near Charleston and Rancho with more on the theft.

Early Monday morning thieves covered security cameras with a sweatshirt and disabled the electric gate to gain entry to the Salvation Army Administration Building and Citadel Corps at 2900 Palomino Lane.

They stole two complete HVAC units, damaged two others and broke into storage sheds, taking maintenance equipment. The resulting replacements and repairs will cost over $19,000.

“In the present economic environment, this type of loss is devastating” said Major Robert Lloyd, Clark County Coordinator for the organization. “Although our insurance will cover some of these losses, we truly cannot afford incidents like this. Every dollar lost represents a reduction in services to our beneficiaries.”

Vandals and thieves have been stealing HVAC equipment or destroying it for the valuable copper which it contains. This is an ongoing problem throughout our community. However, stealing from an organization such as The Salvation Army, which provides needed social services throughout our valley, is simply incomprehensible.

To help make up this loss with financial contributions, please call The Salvation Army at (702) 870-4430 or visit their website, and make a donation.
