LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Two Metro detectives will be honored today for their role in cracking one of the biggest casino capers in recent memory.

Detectives Jason Nelson and Sam Smith will be recognized at 3:30 p.m. today at Red Rock Casino with the “Exceptional Service Award" from Crime Stoppers of Nevada.

Anthony Carleo is seen Dec. 14, 2010, running into the Bellagio wearing a motorcycle helmet.

He grabbed $1.5 million in chips and took off.

Carleo was convicted in August 2011 of robbing the Bellagio and also the Suncoast, where he was accused of taking $19,000 in cash from the poker room.

The two detectives were able to marshal their resources and prevent a third robbery. Their efforts led to the arrest of a suspect who was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

This award is presented to Law Enforcement personnel who have demonstrated exceptional service and dedication in the fight to suppress crime and make Southern Nevada a safer place to live.
