LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- A deadly stretch along Martin Luther King Boulevard is the focus of a fix following citizens complaints.

One of the community activists who has been monitoring the progress of traffic lights promised called News 3. When we arrived at MLK and Balzar, so did public works crews.

Sometimes cars just whiz through MLK, and motorists don't stop for pedestrians like James Aldridge.

"Some people stop and some people . . . one guy just gave me the bird, you know like 'Wow!' You know there's a lot of kids right here," Aldridge said.

Community activist Henry Thorn was among the group of concerned citizens protesting the 45 mile per hour speed limit last year when two senior citizens were killed on MLK near Carey trying to cross the street. The speed limit was lowered to 35 miles an hour. Thorn says the problem still exists.

"But at the same time, people still came through here speeding, so many people still almost got hit," Thorn said.

Citizens asked the city for lights to help. "So we kept checking with the city and asked them when, when, when? And they kept putting us off and off, so we thought maybe they are going to put us off and forget about us," Thorn said.

Several months passed. Then this week, Thorn called News 3. We called the City of Las Vegas to find out why the lights weren't up. When we went out to the area, crews started to show up at the corner of MLK and Balzar.

"I was shocked because I kept calling down at City Hall and they kept giving me different days, 'til I was just shocked to see something being done," Thorn said.

Poles were lifted and wires were connected, making local residents and parents of school children pleasantly surprised and hopeful lives may be saved.

The City of Las Vegas says in one week, three sets of flashing lights will be installed on MLK near Booker Elementary and the faded crosswalks will be repaved.
