LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- A 23-year-old Las Vegas man has been charged with felony driving under the influence in a one-vehicle accident Saturday evening that killed a 15-year-old passenger and injured another.
The accident happened about 8:15 p.m. when a 2003 Chevrolet Blazer that Arturo Castillo of Las Vegas was driving lost control while traveling north on North Rainbow Boulevard just south of West Lake Mead Boulevard.
Metro said that evidence at the scene and witness statements indicated that for unknown reasons Castillo lost control and began sliding toward the east curb where the Blazer left the roadway and struck a light pole that caused major damage to the vehicle. The light pole was knocked over.
Castillo was booked into the Clark County Detention Center. Passenger Oscar Ceballos, 18, suffered minor injuries while the unidentified 15-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident was the 25th traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year and the second in as many nights. A 21-year-old man was killed Friday evening when his Nissan 350Z hit the rear end of a CAT bus at Owens Avenue and Sandhill Road on the east side of the valley. No passengers were injured.
