LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- An effort began today to put gun background checks on the 2016 Nevada ballot.

Supporters filed paperwork with the secretary of state. The background check initiative would expand checks to unlicensed gun sellers, closing a loophole which currently exists in Nevada law.

Under the proposal, all gun sales in Nevada would have to be done through a licensed dealer.

In 2013, Governor Sandoval vetoed a measure that would have expanded background checks, calling it an infringement on second amendment rights.

The background check initiative will begin with a petition drive. Supporters have to gather more than 100,000 signatures to get the measure on the 2016 ballot.
