RENO, Nev. (AP) — Former Washoe County School Police Chief Mike Mieras says in a lawsuit he was fired in retaliation for reporting improper activities by Superintendent Pedro Martinez and others.

Mieras told the Reno Gazette-Journal he won't discuss the specific improprieties he reported regarding Martinez and the district's chief general counsel and internal auditor. He says he only wants to cover the cost of his lawyer and be returned to the job he held for 12 years.

Martinez said when he fired Mieras in June he wanted to take the district in a new direction.

Mieras says the firing came 45 days before he would have reached an important 20-year milestone in the public employee retirement system.

Martinez also is suing the district over his own firing in July and subsequent reinstatement.
