LAS VEGAS (KSNV -- A Sunday morning fire has destroyed eight apartments and displaced an undetermined number of residents in the 1700 block of Karen Avenue in east-central Las Vegas.

Russ Cameron of Clark County Fire & Rescue said the fire call came in at 6:09 a.m. at the Sonoma Shadow Apartments just south of Sahara Avenue and a few blocks west of South Maryland Parkway.

"Initially we had five adults and two children displaced by the fire, but since power is now shut down for the entire section that number will grow," Cameron said.

There were no details on the cause of the fire.

American Red Cross spokesman Lloyd Ziel said more than a dozen volunteers are assisting the residents to ensure they have a safe place to sleep, necessary food, clothing, medication and other essentials.

Ziel said eight apartments were without power in addition to the eight destroyed in the fire.

Cameron said the county will be releasing more details later today.
