LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval was in Las Vegas touring Manuel Cortez Elementary School Friday.

Cortez Elementary School is one of 14 zoom schools in Clark County.

The focus of these designated zoom schools is to help students learn English. About 70 percent of the students at Cortez Elementary School are second language learners

A total of 90 students from each school are selected to participate in the program based on English learning assessment scores.

The state legislature approved $50 million to fund zoom schools as part of a pilot program to boost academic performance of students learning English.

The zoom schools offer free pre-kindergaten, full day kindergarten and reading devlopments centers operated in partnership with UNLV.

"It really is validating for me to see them have these resources, have the teachers feel good that they can get to all the kids and give them the attention that they need. So it’s really a win win for everybody," Sandoval said.

The zoom schools represent just 6 percent of the county's 217 elementary schools.

The reading centers which will be at each zoom school are expected to open October 10.
