LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- It's been nearly a month since the Nevada website to access health insurance went live, and as people have begun to apply, doors have started to open for some that had been shut before.
Sharon and Michael Cathers are so happy to be able to shop for insurance online, at home, on the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange website. Sharon has not been able to buy an individual plan in Nevada since she suffers from a condition known as sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease.
"I just hit a wall and it has been a brick wall for the past two years," she said.
She was diagnosed in Kansas City, her hometown, while she was insured. And reluctantly decided to just keep that plan while she now lives here in the Las Vegas Valley and get treated two or three times a year.
"In the end, I just have to go back to Kansas and I do have a chronic condition that needs to be monitored by a doctor," Cathers said.
And then recently she stubbed her toe. which she says was a very expensive out of pocket venture
"I ended up owing them $1,700 for getting my toe taped up and an orthopedic shoe to wear," Cathers said.
But with the Affordable Care Act in effect, she and her husband Michael received help from a navigator site that helps Nevadans sign up for health insurance. Now they can sign up for a plan together with her pre-existing condition. She is amazed.
"I just say for my purposes Thank God it's in effect and Thank God I'll be able to get it," Cathers said.
The Cathers' say once January rolls around, they can't wait to see doctors under their new plan.
