HENDERSON (KSNV MyNews3) --  The Hostess Company after 82 years decided to turn off the ovens and go out of business, and with no business, that means workers were let go. More than 18,000 were given pink slips including about 170 at the Henderson plant.

Jim Olds had no idea, Friday was his last day until someone at the bakery told him.

“They're shutting her down now. And I said ‘You've got to be kidding me.’ And he said ‘No.’ And I said, ‘Wow, 21 years with this company!’ And I said, “This is how you get treated? It's an ugly situation right now, very ugly,” Olds said.

Olds delivered baked goods to stores for more than two decades.

Hostess has been in a dispute with a bakers union and couldn’t financially weather a strike. So it shut its doors, ending thousands of jobs.

“They just told us just now basically well goodbye. That was it,” said Victor Wielandt, who had been with Hostess for 14 years.

He like others we met leaving the plant, told us he’ll receive one more check sometime next week.

“We just walked in and gave me some paperwork and I’m not working anymore. They’re liquidating. I’ll just deal; get a job,” Wielandt said.

Employees who were let go say they received checks but didn’t get vacation or sick time accumulated, and now they have lost benefits. They say the worst sting is that this happened right before Thanksgiving.

While Olds and Weilandt say they may be able to handle the blow a little better because of their age, they worry about their younger friends who have children to feed.

“I don't have any small kids, so my kids are grown; it's just me and my wife so it’s not too bad for us. She’s got a good job,” Wielandt said.

Others are optimistic they’ll something under these circumstances. But for now, nearly 200 people have been added to the list of jobseekers in the Las Vegas Valley, the week before Thanksgiving.

This is nothing compared to 2014, business will drop full time employees to part time to avoid the high cost of Obummercare. And, we still do not know how many will be layed off in the defense industry, I have read as many as 200,000. Guess we'll find out in Jan 2013.

This happened in the late 80's also. You want to lose your'e job. Then tell your'e union you want more money. These owners can't afford what obama has done to this country. Here in nevada you have a state legislature that just looks for new ways to raise taxes on businesses. Problem is voters are too stupid, they think these companies are loaded with money. Volte these dam democrat and RINO republicans outr of office and you will keep jobs and get raises!!! As long as these businesses are getting squeezed by taxes and regulations they are just getting by!!!!! I laugh at union workers everytime they get in a situation like this, because they are the ones who support these politicians. Sorry union guys, but the entitlement welfare people outwiegh you and the politicians have to pander to them before you so obama and like minded politicians can keep squeezing everyone for thier money and votes. You see welfare ricipients now outwiegh union employees!!!!!!! The dems have finally screwed this country up and there is NO RETURN!!!!!!

Don't be surprised... it's only the beginning. The forecast economic climate is viewed as bleak (watch the stock market for indications of investor confidence, THANKS OBAMA ADMIN!). It's a good bet that a lot of companies may follow the same course. What’s the logic in blaming a company for cutting their losses when dealing with unreasonable union negotiations, unbearable federal burdens, i.e. increased taxes, Obama Care, unreasonable regulatory compliance requirements, etc... all designed to support an entitlement society. It’s not like we have a robust economy or exceptional profit potential, that these companies will lose out on. America good job, we elected ourselves right out of a job, and right into what will become a protracted recession.

Recession, people and businesses suffering, the need comes to cut pay and benefits...Unions say no, everyone loses their job. Unions are awesome!

Stevep - I read your comments, do you really believe the government should own all corporations come on man. As far as hostess having a big stake in Nevada it is 180 jobs, (yes that is sad to see the jobs lost) but hostess here is a nothing, if you want to do something get our construction workers back to work - That is if you still want to complain.

This is one example of why Unions Cripple and demoralize companies. In my opinion any company that allows a union to do their work is only putting a gun their head. Very similar to OBAMA let's socialize everything put everyone on the same scale. You know what you earn what you get, I for one have worked damn hard have more than most and am very proud that I worked my ass off to get. Unions and OBAMA give people no desire to work harder. My 2 cents

this is not about needing a bailout this is about one group of people who have banded together joined a union and that union was sure that they had Hostess over a barrel by refusing to concede...now the joke is on them... and the hardship is widespread...don't blame anyone but the union!! The company called them out...it is such a shame..my guess if you asked those workers this question now..what would the answer be...more money, benefits or a job...the smallest cog in the wheel can cause untold misery.

If we can bailout GM why can't we save Hostess and the 18,500 jobs. Don't forget about the 75,000 jobs of the suppliers for Hostess. I thought we were all about saving jobs and the historic brands of the US. Senators Reid and Heller are you watching this happen in your own state?

The union and it workers thought it was more important to shut down the Hostess plants. Its clear unions do not understand the economic of America, corporations must make a profit for it investors, not pay everything out to its workers and union executives.
