HENDERSON, Nev. – The Henderson Police Department ended its preliminary investigation of the incident that resulted in the use of deadly force on Tuesday, July 29.

Officers stopped a suspicious man riding a bicycle on Horizon Drive west of Boulder Highway at about 3:30 a.m. During questioning, the man was uncooperative and became belligerent. The officers determined they had probable cause to arrest the man.

As the officers attempted to place the man into custody, a struggle ensued. The man produced a knife and stabbed one of the officers multiple times.

Both officers drew their guns and fired, killing the man. The injured officer was transported in stable condition to Sunrise Hospital and was released later the same morning.

The victim has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office as Jesse Vigil, a 51-year-old white male. Vigil was homeless and a known transient in the Boulder Highway area of Henderson.

Vigil was also a registered felon with multiple convictions. He was convicted of second degree murder in Canon City, Colorado on January 29, 1980; assault in Fremont County, Colorado on October 19, 1983; and assault in Denver, Colorado on July 20, 1989.

Vigil was arrested by Henderson Police for domestic battery and ex-felon in possession of a concealed firearm on June 18, 2007; and ex-felon in possession of a concealed firearm on July 16, 2008. He was arrested by North Las Vegas Police for ex-felon in possession of a firearm on August 17, 2010.

The officers involved in Tuesday’s incident are Officer Fergus Baxter, employed with Henderson Police since 2007, and Officer Charles Hedrick, employed with Henderson Police since 2008. Officer Baxter sustained the knife injuries.

The officers are currently on routine paid administrative leave.
