(NBC News) The Cleveland, Ohio house where three women were held captive for nearly a decade has been reduced to rubble.

Crews demolished the home of convicted kidnapper Ariel Castro Wednesday as a crowd of onlookers, and one of the women who survived his torture, looked on.

Peggy Arida, aunt of kidnapping survivor Gina DeJesus, was in the cab of the excavator that took the first swipe at the house.

"This evil house went down and now this community can live," she said afterward.

Michelle Knight, Castro's first victim, was also present.

"I wanted to be here today because no one was there for me when i was missing and I want the people out there including the mothers that they can have strength they can have hope and their child will come back," she said.
