PRIMM (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- The drive to southern California will soon include a new stop, once a massive highway project, called the Joint Port of Entry -- just over the Nevada border -- is complete.

Project manager Jason Bennecke says extra acreage is needed because they want to get every single big rig on the scales.

“The amount of illegal overweight vehicle trucks -- commercial trucks --that are overweight entering into California, is at an unprecedented pace,” Bennecke said.

California Department of Transportation District Director Basem Muallem said he thinks the $80 million price tag is money well spent.

“Well, our biggest investment in California is really our roads, our infrastructure,” Muallem said. “And so we've spent trillions and trillions of dollars building the infrastructure that you're driving on.”

Every single southbound truck will exit Interstate 15. If they've already been approved at an off-site scale, a pre-pass gives them a green light to keep moving. The rest just have to slow down.

“It's a weigh in motion system,” Bennecke said. “As they're traveling at about 30 to 35 mph, they'll automatically be weighed.”

California Highway Patrol Capt. Patrick Rowe says the facility is for commercial vehicle compliance.

“If we find something that's wrong with the vehicle, we can put the vehicle out of service,” Lowe said. “We can put the driver out of service. And then we make sure the vehicle is in compliance. So if it's overweight, then they'll have to call another vehicle out to make sure they have a place to put whatever product it is that they have on board.”

The commercial truck facility should be complete by summer 2015.
