HENDERSON (KSNV MyNews3.com) -- Henderson firefighters put out a three-acre fire at the Whitney Mesa Recreational area that put out giant flames that nearby neighbors described as being up to 70 feet high. The fire department first responded to a call of a palm tree fire, but with the windy dry conditions it quickly grew.
The flames got so tall and powerful at one point they even stretched across the street and burned three palm trees on the opposite side of Sunset. However no buildings were burned and no one was hurt. But it did make neighbors nervous.
“It was blowing. The flames were blowing across the road and it had caught three palm trees on fire so people over here were grabbing the fire extinguishers and putting the palm trees out, because they were putting the fire out on the other side, just to keep it from spreading to the building,” said neighbor Jolene Corwin.
About 30 firefighters worked on this brush fire.
The cause has not been determined.
