LAS VEGAS (KSNV & MyNews3) -- Discussions are underway to find a new home for a 9/11 tribute that once spread before the foot of the Statue of Liberty replica outside New York New York.
For now, thousands of T-shirts that visitors left, often bearing the names of the fire department companies are being preserved at UNLV.
"I think it's a very interesting reaction that people have which is I think people want to do something even if they are thousands of miles away, they want to do something and they want to show that they care," said David Schwartz, UNLV's Director for Gaming Research, who is involved in the preservation process.
For a while a more permanent display was set outside the hotel/casino. However expansion has forced it to be moved, as New York New York adds more retail and a dining complex and bar.
MGM Resorts International sent News 3 the following statement:
"Due to a renovation at New York-New York, the tribute at the Lady Liberty replica has been removed, and the items are being carefully cared for and curated at UNLV. Discussions are ongoing with firefighters and first responders about the relocation of the tribute."
Until a decision is made for the 9/11 tribute the shirts and other items are protected and will remain a part of history as people paid tribute in Las Vegas for a day that forever changed lives in the United States.
