LAS VEGAS (KSNV MyNews3) -- Confusion about Medicaid payments continues to linger over pregnancy-related services in the Las Vegas community.

Local doctors call the recovery of costs by Medicaid unfair, saying it's affecting their bottom line and their patients.

Medicaid says they are just being "fiscally prudent."

Ashley Joyce of Las Vegas was on the receiving end of emergency pregnancy care and was shocked by what happened next.

Joyce went to the emergency room with a potentially deadly condition and lived to see a bill for the costs to save her life.

The problem is that she says what she thought would be covered by her insurance was not

Joyce says she's lucky to be alive.

Just two months ago she was admitted into the emergency room of North Vista Hospital because of an ectopic pregnancy -- her baby was growing in her Fallopian tube, a life-threatening condition for any mother.

With blood filling her abdomen, the ER paged OB/GYN Dr. Eric Grant, who arrived quickly to tend to the crisis.

But weeks later, the emergency continues with both doctor and patient dealing with yet another trauma -- a pressing financial situation because Medicaid, the state-issued insurance for the poor and disabled, now says they won't pay for Joyce’s life-saving surgery.

Joyce was so angered by the language and tone of the message she says she just trashed it while her doctor was left baffled by the Medicaid decision.

Joyce says she now owes more than $25,000, according to the Medicaid notification she received. But a representative said later that the government would work with Joyce about her coverage.
